How to Use Visibility to Help a Senior with Dementia Feel Safer

Dementia creates a great deal of change for your elderly family member and some of those changes don’t feel safe for her. Making some items more visible or otherwise using visibility to solve the problem can be a huge help for a senior with dementia.

Shadows and Glare Can Be Confusing

Your senior’s brain doesn’t process information in the same way that it did before the dementia. Glare and shadows sometimes seem a lot more sinister than they really are and they can create big confusion for your elderly family member. Double check throughout the day to see where glare and shadows show up. These may be areas in which additional daytime lighting can help to remove the problem.

Pictures Can Help to Reduce Confusion

There’s a lot about life that becomes more confusing for your senior when she’s battling dementia. Cabinets and drawers might seem to be a big mystery for her. It’s easy to forget what’s inside and that might make it difficult for her to find what she’s looking for. The same can be true with closed doors in the house. One answer can be to put pictures on drawers, cabinet doors, and room doors. These can help her to identify what’s inside.

Contrasts Mark Edges

Similar colors can blend together, especially if your senior has issues with vision as well as dementia. Using high contrast is a solution that can work really well. This means that you’re placing colors next to each other that are opposites, or as close to opposite as possible. On a black dining table you might find that using a white plate helps your senior to focus on eating, for instance.

Glass Doors and Windows Might Disappear

Glass can be another problem for your senior. Larger panes of glass, particularly large windows and glass doors, can be dangerous because they might not be as visible to your senior as they are to you. Stickers, decals, and other window decorations can help to make these larger panes of glass much more obvious for your elderly family member.

It might not be easy to see these and other issues that your senior might be having. Elderly care providers can help you to spot when your senior is having a difficult time and give you some ideas for correcting the situation. They can also be instrumental in keeping your senior safe in other ways, too.
