How to Avoid Struggling as a New Caregiver

Being a new caregiver is intimidating at times. There’s so much that you need to know and to learn and it may seem as if it never ends. Beating the struggle might involve just trying a few of these ideas.

Take Some Time and Put a Plan Together

You need a plan as a caregiver, or you’re going to constantly feel out of your element. One of the biggest things for you to remember is that you need to be part of the plan, too. All too often caregivers make all sorts of contingency plans for their seniors but forget that they need to take care of themselves, too. Don’t let that be you.

You’re Going to Be Learning a Lot
There’s a lot to learn as a new caregiver. Your senior may have health issues and there may be specific requirements that you need to master in what feels like a short amount of time. Embrace the idea that you’re going to be learning a lot and that you’re going to keep learning. As much as you get under your belt, there will always be something new.

Put Together a Support Team
You need a support team and that’s something you might not have considered at all. Much of your “team” is probably already in place, though. Your senior’s doctors and other medical specialists are definitely part of the team. Other family members might also make up part of the team. If you don’t have a lot of help or you feel as if you’re not getting the help that you need, consider hiring elderly care providers. They can help you with a variety of situations and solutions.

Make Keeping Track of Everything Easier
There’s a lot for you to keep track of as a caregiver. In fact, all of that information alone can feel overwhelming. Make sure that you’ve got a way to capture and to track everything. That might mean you’ve got one spiral notebook that you write all your notes in. Or maybe you keep a planner that has all of the information you need. Whatever your solution is, make sure that you use it.

Perfection is not the goal as a caregiver. Your goal is primarily to make sure that your senior is safe and well cared for and that’s something you’re probably doing a lot better than you realize. Take a deep breath and just do the best that you can.

Excerpt: If caregiving is new to you, give yourself a little bit of time to get up to speed.
